International Bar Association’s Annual Litigation Forum
Over the course of 3 days in May 2018, David Szmukler of GFE’s New York office and Molly Ahmed of GFE’s London office attended and exhibited at the International Bar Association’s Annual Litigation Forum in Chicago.
The focus of the forum was advocacy in the 21st Century and was attended by around 300 delegates from over 50 jurisdictions.
We attended practical sessions, including trial advocacy, the use of new technologies and the extent to which such innovations have changed advocacy and ethics. We were fascinated to hear the perspectives of colleagues in both civil law and common law jurisdictions in discussing their tactics and strategies, including the importance of developing a trial theme, how to make the best evidence stand out and what advocacy techniques are most effective for judges.
More esoteric but just as fascinating was the session on the science of advocacy and persuasion: sub-conscious bias, cultural differences, psychological influences on witness testimony and the use of applied psychology and neuroscience in developing oral arguments and written submissions.
We also enjoyed Chicago’s famous hospitality, meeting old and new friends at Chicago’s illustrious Art Institute and the prestigious surroundings of the University Club of Chicago.
Global Financial Experts thanks the IBA for hosting such a wonderful event and we look forward to attending future conferences.
